While I was doing my household chores, I felt spinning sensations so many times but I ignored it and thought that it was normal. However, day by day it increased. At the end I decided to go for a checkup and lastly, the doctor said I was ‘vertigo’.

What Is Vertigo? 

Vertigo is basically a feeling of spinning or dizziness that often makes you feel as if you or your surroundings are spinning or rotating when they are actually not.

Vertigo can be temporary or long-term and may also be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea issues or imbalance. However, It’s my personal suggestion to everyone who faces light dizziness or sensations frequently, you certainly need to consult a doctor. 

As I told you, in my case I completely ignored it and when my problem escalated I faced a lot of problems. Therefore do not avoid it.

Of course, experiencing vertigo can be distressing, and it is important to recognize the signs and symptoms at an early stage so that you can prevent it on time. 

Spinning Sensation

When you feel vertigo, it feels as if everything is spinning around you, even though it isn’t. These sensations can go from mild to intense and may come with dizziness and stomach pain. 

Causes Of Vertigo 

Dizziness 

The feeling of dizziness is normal when you have vertigo. This makes you feel unsteady or you may faint. Sometimes you may also feel that things are revolving around you like an earthquake. This makes it difficult to remain balanced. Dizziness can be mild or severe and can make you sick also. 

Nausea

In vertigo, you may feel like vomiting several times. This is accompanied by feeling dizzy and feeling as if everything is spinning around you. This makes the whole experience even more uncomfortable.

Balance Problems 

In vertigo, balance problems are common, making it difficult to stay steady on your feet. You may feel as if you are shaking or just about to fall. These issues are usually accompanied by a feeling of dizziness and lightheadedness. 

Nystagmus 

Nystagmus means when your eyes may move, shake or jerk rapidly uncontrollably. It happens in vertigo. You may also feel faintness and a feeling that things are spinning around you. 

Causes Of Vertigo 

The common causes of vertigo are – 

Inner Ear Problems – Problems related to the inner ear balance mechanism, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular neuritis, and Meniere’s disease.

Central Nervous System Disorder – Vertigo may occur if there is a problem with the brainstem or cerebellum, which controls balance. Some conditions such as stroke, migraine, or multiple sclerosis can affect these parts of the brain and cause vertigo. 

Medications – There are certain medications that can affect the inner ear or brain, which can gradually increase the chances of vertigo as a side effect. 

Head Injuries – Trauma to the head or neck can disrupt the inner ear or the brain’s balance center, which can cause vertigo. 

Other Health Conditions – Disorders such as anxiety, low blood pressure or dehydration can trigger vertigo. 

How Can We Help You To Treat Different Types Of Vertigo? 

The best way to treat vertigo depends on what’s causing it and how bad the symptoms are. For a type called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), doctors often suggest special exercises. 

These exercises like the Epley maneuver or the Semont maneuver, help move the small crystals in your inner ear back where they should be, which can relieve vertigo. 

Another way to treat Vertigo is Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT). It is used to treat various types of vertigo, such as vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis. VRT includes several exercises for each individual that will help your brain get better at maintaining balance by doing activities or exercises that challenge you. If you do VRT, it can relieve your vertigo symptoms and improve your balance and stability.

Sometimes, your doctor may give you some medications to relieve vertigo symptoms, such as meclizine or diazepam, that can help with dizziness and feeling sick to your stomach. Additionally, if your vertigo is related to migraine, you may receive medications such as beta-blockers or anticonvulsants to prevent it. 

In severe cases, when normal treatment does not work well, surgery may be the last option to stop vertigo. Surgeries such as cutting a nerve or blocking the ear canal aim to prevent balance problems.

Apart from medication, changing your lifestyle can also help manage vertigo. You have to avoid things like caffeine and alcohol consumption, always stay hydrated, manage stress, and doing relaxation exercises can all help reduce vertigo symptoms.
